Home Care vs. Nursing Facility
If you suddenly had a stroke, heart attack or maybe even a motor vehicle accident that crippled you, permanently or temporarily what would you do? Would you stay in a rehab facility? Would you stay home and hire a private duty nurse? Would you utilize caregivers? These are things we don’t often think about, however unexpected health concerns are a part of life. Most people have a living will or advanced directives in place, however the thought of facility vs home care doesn’t always cross the mind, so its left out. In the times that we are living in more and more people are opting to stay in the home as long as possible through the end of life. Being a nurse for almost 7 years I’ve witnessed a lot working in facilities. Most of the time staff is stressed and over worked due to staffing issues. On average a CNA spends about 10-15 minutes with each person and that’s primarily in the morning getting them dressed. Nurses spend even less time with patients often only coming in to give medication or to do a treatment. Unless a person has a very active family they are usually alone. Even with activities staff there is just not enough staff to give each individual the attention they deserve. With home care you are able to receive personalized care and your caregiver is there for you and only you. Mental stress causes physical wear and tear on the body having some individuals decline rapidly after admitting to a healthcare facility. Being at home while you are healing can offer many benefits and even prolong life, in my opinion. When choosing a home care provider be sure to have a list of questions, be sure they are knowledgeable and can meet all your needs.
